Kayla Mae Olmstead

Kayla was born with Left-sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (LCDH). When she was born she was in the NICU for a total of 55 days. She reherniated two years later, had her repair surgery in May 2011 and spent 11 days in hospital recovering. She is a tough little girl and we are truly blessed to have her here.

Recovery- Day 3

I would first like to thank everyone for all your support, help and prayers!! It has been a rough couple of weeks thinking of surgery, postponing surgery, to having surgery, to finding out at the end it was a major one... more major than the docs thought!! ugh! So your prayers and kind thoughts have really helped us get through this tough time.  We honestly appreciate all of it!! Thank you so much!!

Last night was ok.  I think Kayla slept fairly well, and Jerry and I got a better nights sleep- we traded off at 2 a.m.  I got up, and he laid down.  But now it's just me for the week- we'll see how that goes.

Another uneventful day- phew!  Kayla seemed a little sad in the morning... but seemed to get better during the afternoon/evening.

In the morning, it was decided that by the pain people to stop the epidural... but only stop it, not take it out.  They wanted to see how she would do w/o it... but once one of the Drs. that helped our surgeon during K's surgery came by she was not happy.  So it was ordered to be put back... good reasoning as well.  She said the longer time they have resting, the faster the healing will be.  So the epidural was ordered back on with two other pain meds... I have only seen the other pain meds given once.. one was tylenol- and I don't remember what the other one was called, but all the different types were for something different- i don't know if that makes sense.. :)  So she really only went w/o pain meds for about 2 hours, and I think it took that long for the epidural to really be out of her system anyway- but I think she did fine, but moved a ton more- so I totally see the reasoning the surgeon gave- it helps her to be still... we move her enough during the day to make her body still use muscles but she needs to rest.

Kayla is loving the sponges with water again- here she is watching Leapfrog (thanks Mary) and sucking on it.

Nina and Papa are coming home from MB this weekend, and it just so happened that we were here on their way home.. so they stopped in.  Kayla, I know, was totally excited but still not herself yet.  So she didn't show much emotion.  But she LOVED that they showed up bc she hasn't seen them in six months.  She fell asleep shortly after they arrived, she had just been given pain meds... and slept for two and a half hours.  She woke up and said something- Jerry and I didn't quite catch it so Jer asked her "what did you say hunny?" and Kayla said "Nina...?" in her cutest whine voice ever- and so I told her that Nina and Papa had to go, and she started to cry. :( It was great to see you mom and dad!! <3

Vince, Charlie's daddy, came by to bring ME some pain meds.. and they WORKED- thanks Vince!!!! I feel a ton better!  Anyway- Vince came up to give me some meds and the second Kayla saw him, she gave him the smallest but cutest smile!  The first smile I have seen in two days!! I LOVED it!!

After our visit with Vince, Kayla got a sponge bath.  She was ok with it bc I let her help clean herself with a wash cloth- I stopped just to get my wash cloth wet and warm again, and she says "mom do it again" :) She talked a bit during the sponge bath, and then as I went to put on one of her hospital gowns she said "no hospital".. :(

Then Jerry wanted to get going so he could make it home by dark, so I ran down to the cafeteria to get some dinner before he left. I came back and Kayla had one of those sponges that we put water on.  She LOVES them!  She kept asking for "more, over there." (there are two sinks in our room- "over there" is near the doors to leave, and "over here"- is in the "bathroom" area).  Jerry said he got a couple huge smiles when he kept going to the sink she wanted.  I got it for her a couple of times, and one time she told me to go "over here" and I said "okie dokie" and she said "okie dokie artichoke" :)  After a nice good bye from Kayla - it was so cute.. she said goodbye daddy, I love you daddy, signed I love you.. just like it would be at home.  We were worried she'd be really upset.  But she may get that later on when she doesn't seem him for a couple of days. :(
after her sponge bath and after daddy left

Kayla JUST got some more meds and when she was given the suppository she didn't flinch or move, she just said "ouch" when the nurse was done...hahahaha it was sooo cute!!

so annoyed that she can't get up- :(

She seems better now with the three pain med combination- just hope it's ok when they start to take it away.

I'm glad I found your blog. It makes me cry too, especially knowing that one day I might refer to your blog when my daughter reherniates... Your daughter is beautiful and a fighter!
