Kayla Mae Olmstead

Kayla was born with Left-sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (LCDH). When she was born she was in the NICU for a total of 55 days. She reherniated two years later, had her repair surgery in May 2011 and spent 11 days in hospital recovering. She is a tough little girl and we are truly blessed to have her here.

Scary X-ray

On Wednesday, we had to take Kayla down to Syracuse for her year appt. with her surgeon.. which was pretty much just an x-ray and a "hey how is everything going" with Dr. R. Well.. that "hey how is everything" was a "hey so the x-ray looked a little strange to me."  UM YIKES!! Mama Olmstead does not like to hear anything like this.. so of course I immediately panicked! Dr. R didn't seem too concerned but he listened to her anyway and said she sounded great- didn't hear bowels up in the chest or anything.. he just said she sounded "great"!

Now there was also confusion with the x-ray technician.. apparently the last time we were there, the technician labeled the sides wrong.  Therefore it was confusing to the technician on Wednesday- so when Dr. R got that all figured out he came back to us and said I really don't think she's reherniated. He proceeded to show us the x-ray- and where the gortex patch was - it was high- and not at the same level as the diaphragm  - the real diaphragm can move normally, but the patch does not ... does not function like that.  Dr. R said that her patch appears to be thin and she so small that it's hard to see much and it will be easier to tell when she is older - so he thinks in 6 months he will be able to see better.

So pretty much we were told to watch her- and they would check up again in 6 months.  It's still a little scary to think about her reherniating but for now all we know is she is doing well.  However, since he didn't want to do another x-ray that same day, or even in 3 months makes me feel a little at ease seeing how if he thought even a little bit that she had reherniated that he would have done the x-ray sooner than 6 months.

On a happier note- here are some cute pics of K at the playground.. she LOVES the swing!! :)

It's a ....

HEALTHY HEALTHY baby girl!! Just got dr confirmation that all is well with the new baby!! (of course all is well with what they can see on the ultra sound). The ultra sound tech even pointed out the diaphragm and stomach to her trainee - which really helped Jer and I out to make sure there was no CDH!! I'm sooooo very excited!! I was so stressed for that stinkin ultra sound!! Now I'm good to go!! haha YAYAYAYAYAYAY!! :)

Happy Birthday Kayla Mae! :)

Kayla Mae on her birthday- :) She got gifts from mommy and daddy, Vince, Patty and Charlie and a small cake on her actual birthday...

The Saturday following her birthday we had a few people over.  A FEW! :) And it was such a nice day we got to open the windows and go outside for a while.  So for her bday I made a pig cake.. I figured this was probably the only one where I got to choose which cake she would like so I went for what I would love! :) I wasn't totally happy with the cake- it didn't turn out how I would have liked... but it worked.

We had a great time with everyone who came to see K on her first birthday!! We know we have made people feel very nervous about being around her and keeping you from her was hard to do as on her bday she had to get some stranger tears out- sorry for that! But I am glad she quickly warmed up to you and hope she sees you soon again as all of our other friends and family.

Kayla got a lot of toys for her bday which I'm certain she LOVES them all- dada and mama on the other hand.. haha no they are great!  Just more to pick up at the end of the day!! :)

Kayla has grown so much in the past month!! She now can say "dada" and sometimes we think she says "mama"... but of course not knowing who is who or that they have a true meaning... but she does say them! Which has been a struggle for me.. in fact it was the DAY OF HER BIRTHDAY she finally said "dada"!! haha phew! K has also conquered:
 - standing alone- for a few seconds..
 - walking with just one hand on hers
 - climbing the stairs with ease
 - eats well - Easy Mac being her favorite- lots of real food - :) The jars are the fall back.. :)
 - she drinks 3 bottles a day, she is now up to 5oz of whole milk mixed with 2oz of formula
 - drinks from a sippy cup ( a straw one) well- but will not for "baba" times..
 - knows what "baba" means, "get the ball", "throw the ball", "where's my eye", "where's my nose" ( and with the eye and nose deal, she was sooo cute in the beginning bc she would only show us where the eye was on her toys! now she can do it on our face- but not hers! :) )
 - sleeps without a binky at nap times, only has a bink at bed time.

She is a big girl and proves to be smarter and smarter everyday.  We can't wait to see what she starts doing in the next couple of months!! :)
